Job Summary: Do you love the web? Thrive on working with a team to produce easy to navigate content, exciting showcases and standards based websites? Canonical are looking for you! The Web Designer we're looking for will work within the design team on the Canonical and Ubuntu web properties. The successful applicant will develop the experience our prospective customers and our developer community have via our Canonical, Ubuntu and other web portals. These portals are critical to the success of our business and our products and will be expected to own this experience from a visual point of view. The role of our Web Designer will be to re-design the experience according to our end users needs for a re-launch in 2010. These portals will often be the first experience users have of our products, company and community so it is vitally important that this experience is painless and sets the benchmark for further interaction with us and our products.
Reports To: Creative Strategy Lead

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • To work with the web team to specify and implement new functionality.
  • To identify business and user needs and requirements for these portals.
  • To develop user centred, iterative designs around these needs for sign off by key stakeholders.
  • To work with our Usability specialists to ensure the UI is simple and intuitive.
  • To create a full specification of these signed off designs for implementation and launch.
  • To work with our Graphic Designers to create the digital assets required to illuminate the experience.

Required skills and experience:

  • Experience of delivering web sites and web applications from specification to delivery.
  • Working knowledge of CSS and HTML.
  • Experience of open-source software.
  • Our Web Designer will need to develop relationships with end users as well as internal staff and the wider community to ensure they understand their needs fully. So it is essential that the successful candidate has excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
