Ubuntu Mobile Developer

Job Location: Your home, as long as you have broadband. North American & European time zones preferred. Some international travel will be required.
Job Summary: Our goal is to make the best open source Linux Distribution, your job is to assist in solving issues around creating it. You need to be a jack-of-all-trades, able to quickly determine what the actual issue is and how to solve it, whatever “it” might be. Work on a broad range of Ubuntu development tasks.
Reports To: Mobile Team Manager

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Work with vendor partners to integrate software support for specific netbook devices
  • Become involved in planning of new Ubuntu features, both new ideas in your areas of interest and advising on work being done elsewhere
  • Take on primary maintenance of some components of Ubuntu. The details will depend on your specific interests and abilities, your most important attribute will be adaptability to a wide range of situations and software
  • Engage in bug-fixing work across a wide variety of components of the Ubuntu platform, helping to ensure that Ubuntu can produce regular high-quality releases on time.
  • Assist in pre-release testing of Ubuntu, taking personal ownership of problems and driving them to solutions.
  • Collaborate with other teams in the Ubuntu community and with upstream developers where appropriate, to make sure that Ubuntu includes the very best in free software and that our goals are taken into account by other projects.
  • When necessary, respond to and work to resolve issues raised by end users and commercial support customers.

Required skills and experience:

  • Strong C and C++ Linux experience
  • Strong Gtk experience
  • Clutter experience
  • GL experience
  • Capacity to learn quickly about new systems and techniques
  • Familiarity with open source development tools and methodology,especially those in common use for Ubuntu and Debian package maintenance, including Debian packaging tools: APT, dpkg, debhelper and CDBS
  • Ability to be productive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self-motivation, delivering according to a schedule
  • Good personal skills in order to develop strong working relationships with team mates, members of upstream projects and counterparts from other distributions
  • Strong English communication skills, especially over phone, email and IRC.
